The Italy international joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for 55 million pounds on an initial five-year contract, which was due to expire in 2028. The new agreement was reached during Tonali's 10-month suspension for breaching Italian betting regulations, in a move understood to be aimed at protecting the club's long-term interests.

Tonali, 25, was banned in October 2023 by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and later received a suspended two-month ban from the English FA for further betting breaches. Despite his absence from competitive football during the ban, the Magpies supported the player and began discussions over a contract extension during that period.

Tonali returned to action at the start of the 2024–25 season and played a key role in helping Newcastle win the Carabao Cup - their first major domestic trophy in 70 years-and secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

He made 45 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring six goals and providing three assists. Tonali has started all eight of Newcastle's Premier League fixtures so far in the 2025–26 campaign and has now made a total of 67 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals.
