Dayot Upamecano contract talks accelerate as Bayern Munich push for breakthrough
Bayern Munich's push to secure Dayot Upamecano's future has accelerated, with the German champions deep in negotiations over a new long-term contract as the defender moves into the final seven months of his current deal.
Dayot Upamecano of Bayern Munich Upamecano, now 27, is free to speak with overseas clubs from January, and both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are monitoring the situation closely. The French international would be an attractive free-transfer option in the summer, but Bayern are moving quickly to avoid that scenario.
The BBC have reported that Bayern are in advanced discussions with the centre-back, who has held what have been described as "positive" meetings with the club's hierarchy. Upamecano is understood to be keen to commit the prime years of his career to Munich after rediscovering his best form under Vincent Kompany.
The Belgian coach has played a decisive role in stabilising the defender's performances over the past 18 months. Upamecano, who had previously been criticised for inconsistency after arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021, has become one of Bayern's most reliable players and a standout performer for club and country. Many pundits have rated him among the world's most complete centre-backs in 2025.
Club honorary president Uli Hoeness has also provided a major hint that the talks are heading towards a successful conclusion. Speaking to Sky Sports, Hoeness said he was "very confident" that Upamecano would sign a new deal, adding that Bayern "know how important he is for us".
Securing the Frenchman would continue Bayern's strong run of renewals in 2025. The Bundesliga giants have already tied down Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich to new long-term agreements, ensuring the core of the team remains settled.
Even if Upamecano commits his future, Bayern are expected to assess the market for another central defender next summer due to uncertainty surrounding Kim Min-jae's long-term plans.
The club have been linked with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, who will be available on a free transfer, and Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck, who has been watched closely throughout the autumn.
For now, though, Bayern's priority is clear: finish the job and keep Upamecano in Munich for the long haul.
