Report: Shreyas Iyer in pole position to replace India ODI captain Rohit Sharma

The shake-up at the top of Indian cricket continues. Following arguably premature Test retirement from legend Virat Kohli earlier this year, Shubman Gill was selected as the man to lead India in red-ball cricket.

The incumbent Sharma and talisman Kohli have been given the space by the all-powerful BCCI to decide the end of their ODI careers. It's been widely reported that this may happen during or after the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia.

Now, the speculation is rife about Sharma's replacement and Jagran News reports that Iyer is being strongly considered by the BCCI. His exclusion from the upcoming Asia Cup squad - where Gill is captain - seems to provide evidence to the contrary.

However, the BCCI has indicated that it doesn't want one captain across all formats, so there's not much to read into Iyer's exclusion from the T20 event.

Iyer certainly has the credentials to lead India in the 50-over format. The 30-year-old is devastating with the bat, averaging 48.22 at a strike rate of 100 across his 70 matches. In the recent ICC Champions Trophy, Iyer finished as India's top scorer with 243 runs in five innings, including two half-centuries.
