India captain Rohit Sharma calls time on Test career with immediate effect
India captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect but will continue to be available for his country in the ODI format.
Rohit Sharma Test cricketThe 38-year-old Rohit had already called time on his international T20 career after leading India to the T20 World Cup title last year in the Caribbean.
The news means India will need to appoint a full-time captain in the longest format with a five-match Test series against England scheduled to start on 20 June at Headingley.
Rohit wrote in a social media post: "Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites.
"Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format."
Jasprit Bumrah is currently India's designated vice-captain and led the team in the first and last Tests in Australia in Rohit's absence at the start of the year.
Rohit made 67 appearances in Test cricket for India since making his debut against West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2013, where he scored 177.
He scored a total of 4 301 runs in the Test format, that included 12 centuries and 18 fifties with a highest score of 212.
