Introduction
Ramanathan began playing tennis at the tender age of 5. His father, a former badminton player, introduced him to the game.
When he wasn't playing with his young son, he was running a textile business with his wife, Alagammai. Ramanathan heaped praise on his parents for their exceptional work ethic and explained how they are his biggest inspiration.
"They sacrificed a lot for me to do what I like the most," he said in an interview.
Career
Part of Ramanathan's parents' sacrifice was sending him to train at the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Barcelona, Spain, when he was 15. The early years were difficult for him, as he was also juggling his studies at Loyola College in Chennai, where he earned a BA in Economics.
In 2014, he made the main draw of his home tournament, the Chennai Open, but was bundled out in the second round. Ramanathan returned to Chennai two years where he reached the quarterfinals, which remains his best result at an ATP World Tour event.
Ramanathan went on to upset then world number Dominic Thiem at the 2017 Antalya Open to mark his first win against a top-10 player.
The Indian star won his maiden ATP Challenger singles title at the 2021 Manama Challenger, defeating Evgeny Karlovskiy in the final.
While Ramanathan's success in singles is limited, he has more achievements in doubles. Ramanathan made his Grand Slam main draw debut in mixed doubles at the 2021 US Open with Ankita Raina, facing compatriots Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza in a historic first-ever all-Indian match.
Success finally came the following year when he partnered up with doubles legend Bopanna. He and Ramanathan won two ATP Tour doubles titles - the 2022 Adelaide International and 2022 Maharashtra Open - to rise up the rankings.
Personal life
Ramanathan admits that listening to music is his guilty pleasure, with Ed Sheeran and Indian singer A.R. Rahman among his top artists. He is a student of the sport, as Timothy Gallwey's The Inner Game of Tennis is his favourite book.
But if Ramanathan wasn't playing tennis, he would have tried his hand at table tennis, badminton, cricket or even poker.
