The third day of the 2025 Esports World Cup chess tournament featured both the quarterfinals and semifinals, with Carlsen (Team Liquid) and Firouzja (Team Falcons) securing their place in Friday's final with $250 000 up for grabs.

Carlsen began his day with a quarterfinal match against Nihal Sarin, which ended 2.5 - 0.5 in favour of the Norwegian. But his semifinal was not an easy task.

There, he faced Hikaru Nakamura from Team Falcons. The American actually handed Carlsen his first loss at the event in Game 3. But he bounced back with two wins and a draw to book his place in the final via a 4-3 scoreline.

"I've shot one falcon, I want to shoot one more tomorrow," quipped Carlsen after the match.

Meanwhile, Firouzja dominated Arjun Erigaisi of Gen.G Esports in his semifinal, winning 4-1 to book a date with Carlsen.
