Report: Virgil van Dijk's Liverpool future 'still unsure'
Virgil van Dijk, the towering captain of Liverpool, faces a pivotal moment in his career as his contract nears its end.

With Van Dijk's deal set to expire in the summer, the Reds could lose him, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, all free agents at season's end. Liverpool have dominated this campaign under new manager Arne Slot, sitting 15 points clear atop the Premier League and preparing to face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.
Van Dijk, who lifted every major honour under Jurgen Klopp, seems poised to add more silverware to his collection.
Yet, uncertainty clouds his future. After Liverpool's Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, Van Dijk addressed the speculation. "I've no idea," he said. "Genuinely, I have no idea at the moment. Talks aren't on hold, nothing's on hold. There are conversations behind the scenes, but that's it.
"My focus is on the next 10 games. If there's news, you'll hear it."
Rumours swirled post-match that PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos were courting Van Dijk. However, it later emerged he was apologising for a halftime jab at Campos during the Parc des Princes clash.
Still, French outlet L'Equipe has claimed the Reds' European elimination "could accelerate discussions" for their out-of-contract trio.
The report revealed Al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia have tabled an offer exceeding 20 million euros net per year. "The Reds captain is in reflection and has not yet given an answer, preferring to focus on the season's end," it stated.
Romano, meanwhile, offered insight into Liverpool's stance. "They really want to keep Virgil," he said. "The club insist on confidence in their plan, but it's too early to say relaxed—you're relaxed when the contract's signed. They're in talks and believe they can make it happen."
Despite this optimism, no agreement has been reached.
On X, Liverpool posted after the PSG defeat, praising Van Dijk's leadership, with Slot adding in a press conference on March 12, 2025, "Virgil's been immense for us—he's our rock."
Yet, with Saudi interest intensifying, the Reds faithful wait anxiously to see if their captain will stay or chase a new challenge. For now, Van Dijk's eyes remain on the pitch, not the dotted line.
