Report: Tottenham's Cristian Romero open to Atletico Madrid move

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is reportedly open to a move to Atletico Madrid, with Diego Simeone a keen admirer of the Argentine centre-back.

Romero, 25, first joined Spurs on loan from Atalanta in 2021 before making the switch permanent in 2022. Since then, he has made 115 appearances for the club across four seasons.

However, injuries have plagued his current campaign, causing him to miss nearly half of Tottenham's matches.

Despite being under contract until 2027, Romero will enter the final two years of his deal this summer, a point at which clubs often reassess their players' futures.

Tottenham could be vulnerable to offers, especially if the defender expresses a desire to leave.

The Argentine, who played a key role in his country's 2022 World Cup triumph, has attracted interest from Spain.

Real Madrid's chief scout, Juni Calafat, watched him during the north London derby in September, indicating potential wider interest from La Liga's top clubs.

Romero has not shied away from voicing his concerns about Spurs' direction. Following a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Chelsea in December, he criticised the club's ownership, appearing to question their investment levels compared to rivals.

He later apologised for the remarks, but the incident raised doubts about his long-term commitment.
