Kamohelo Mokotjo opens up on Cape Town City departure

    Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo has spoken out following his sudden exit from Cape Town City FC, just days before the end of the season.

    Mokotjo, who joined the Citizens at the start of the current campaign after a spell with Sekhukhune United, featured in 24 matches across all competitions. His arrival had been seen as a significant boost to the squad, given his international experience and time spent playing in Europe with clubs such as Brentford and FC Twente.

    However, with two crucial fixtures remaining in the club's fight against relegation, Mokotjo was unexpectedly released. His departure comes as part of a broader shake-up at the club, with veteran midfielder Thulani Serero and goalkeeper Elson Ayanda Sithole also being shown the door.

    While Cape Town City has yet to release an official statement, Mokotjo confirmed the news on social media, expressing his gratitude and surprise at the timing.

    "Didn't expect to be saying goodbye so soon, but we part ways with Cape Town City FC," Mokotjo wrote on Instagram. "Thank you to my teammates, the fans, and everyone behind the scenes. Wishing you all the best for the rest of the season and beyond. Looking forward to what's to come."

    The 34-year-old did not reveal any details regarding his next move, leaving speculation open about whether he will remain in the South African top flight or explore opportunities elsewhere.

    Cape Town City now faces an uphill battle to maintain their top-tier status. They currently sit at the foot of the Betway Premiership table and will need maximum points from their remaining fixtures  -  away to Polokwane City this weekend, followed by a final-round Western Cape Derby clash against Stellenbosch FC at Cape Town Stadium.

    In addition to winning both matches, the Citizens will be relying on favorable results from other relegation-threatened teams to avoid being drawn into the promotion/relegation playoffs.

    As the club navigates one of the most critical periods in its recent history, the departure of experienced figures like Mokotjo marks a surprising twist - and perhaps signals deeper changes on the horizon at the Mother City  club.
