Arsenal complete signing of Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad
Arsenal have completed the signing of highly rated Spanish international Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, the club confirmed on Saturday.

The 26-year-old midfielder becomes the latest addition to Mikel Arteta's squad as the Gunners continue to strengthen in key areas ahead of the 2025–26 campaign. Zubimendi, widely regarded as one of LaLiga's most consistent holding midfielders, joins the Gunners for 60 million pounds after an impressive season with Sociedad and a strong showing at Euro 2024 with Spain.
Zubimendi had long attracted interest from top European clubs. Real Madrid made a late push to sign him this summer following the arrival of Xabi Alonso as manager, but Arsenal had already secured an agreement with the player months earlier, with sources telling ESPN the deal was finalized in March.
Liverpool were also heavily linked with Zubimendi in 2024, identifying him as their primary target in defensive midfield. However, the midfielder opted to remain in San Sebastian for another season, a decision he later described as "the right one" for his development.
A product of the Real Sociedad academy, Zubimendi made over 170 senior appearances for the club, developing into a central figure under Imanol Alguacil. Known for his composure under pressure, tactical awareness, and distribution, Zubimendi has been frequently compared to Sergio Busquets for his style of play.
His reputation grew further after stepping in for the injured Rodri during the Euro 2024 final against England. Entering at halftime, Zubimendi delivered a composed performance in a high-pressure situation, helping Spain close out a 2-1 victory to lift the trophy.
Manchester City also considered Zubimendi as a potential replacement for Rodri earlier in the season following a long-term knee injury to their midfield anchor. However, it is understood that Arsenal's long-term planning and Arteta's direct involvement were decisive in securing the transfer.
Zubimendi will reunite with his former Sociedad teammate Mikel Merino, who joined Arsenal last year. His arrival provides Arteta with additional quality and depth in midfield, as the club looks to mount another serious title challenge both domestically and in Europe.
